Dinosaur projects

Come and see our dinosaur projects. We teamed up with a buddy and chose a dinosaur to research.we had to use two sources of information. We mostly used books and the internet. Then we drew a picture of our dinosaur. We are really proud of our posters and we learned lots about our dinosaur....

BUOYANCY ACTIVITY with ROOM 6!

On Friday we visited our Buddy Class Room 6 for a very cool science activity. We had to make a plasticine boat that floated. Sounds simple right? Well it was actually really tricky because we had to make sure there were no holes in it and that it wasn't too heavy. When it floated we had to see how many beads we could put in without it sinking!...

This week we began investigating in the certainty, likelihood,  uncertainty, or  impossibility of events happening, and came up with of some our own creative ideas.  We also tried to predict what would happen if we threw a coin 50 times.  Would there be more heads or tails?  We tried with dice too....

Dinosaurs!

What a great start to Term 4 in Room 5. This week we have looked at the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods, when dinosaurs were alive, in relation to our students today. We have also started to look at fossils, the range and types of dinosaurs and begun to classify the types and features of dinosaurs. Wow, what a week!...

Commonwealth Dolls

This term we have been learning about the Commonwealth and Commonwealth countries. As part of this, students created a doll out of newspaper to dress in their countries colours.  These are now displayed in our classroom. Come in and take a look.

Mannequin Making!

This morning we carried on making our mannequins that we started yesterday. We chose the materials we wanted to use and created a simple sketch of our costume ideas. Then we experimented with how to construct our costumes. It was a lot of fun!!!...

Many of the children dressed up as their favourite book character today. Our classroom was very colourful and exciting. A special highlight was the parade in the hall involving the whole school.

Geometry

We have had lots of fun in Room 5 this week feeling and describing 3D shapes. We had to work out how many faces, edges, and corners  there were. 

Poi making

The children in room11 rose to the challenge of poi making after watching a clip on YouTube of how to do it. They had to learn how to plait and tie knots as well as twist and turn the cello tape and bags. Great perseverance and wonderful to see those who were more capable helping out those who found the task tricky!...

Skipping

We have been spending time practising our skipping over the last two weeks, preparing for Jump rope for heart in week 4. Great fun and excellent exercise too!

Maths in Room 5.

This term we have been focussing on Multiplicative thinking. To help us, we looked at number patterns on a 100's board this week. We saw the patterns that 2, 4, 8, 3, 6, 9,  5 and 10 made on the board. This helps us see the number patterns in multiplication, and helps us remember our times tables.  ...

Football World Cup

Some of Room 5 students have become passionate about the World cup. We have started researching some of the countries that have made it through to the last 16, and finding which continent they are in, their language, currency, a some interesting facts about them. Obviously we're keeping a eye on the results too....

Polyfest performance.

Some of room 5 students have been practising in preparation for their Polyfest performance next Wednesday.  It was great for the group to be able share their learning with the rest of the school at assembly on Friday.

Multiplication strategies

We have been working on our Multiplication strategies, particularly breaking down number problems and using what we know to solve them. This week we used number Animal strips to show some of the different ways we could solve the problem.

Literacy Circles

Room 4 have been working hard on developing our literacy circle skills this term. We have focused on Discussion Rules and also on all the reading strategies we know - inferring, visualizing, questioning to name a few.We are now able to run our circles independently, ka pai!...

We have been working on our Netball skills over the past few weeks, and having some fun too!

SPIDERS

We have been learning to find facts about all sorts of mini beasts. We had fun learning new information about spiders and drawing webs for our spiders to hang in.

Room 4 has been learning a lot about Area and Perimeter so far this term.  They had another task to complete for Mrs Kaye.We had 24 apple trees to plant in our garden.  How would we plant them in order to take up the least amount of ground from our play area?  What was the area?  Each group had 24 counters to help model the tree planting.  What do you think we discovered...

We have been investigating how we find the Perimeter and the Area of a space.  Mrs Kaye needed help building a dog pen for her sister's new puppy.  She had 40 metres of fence, each one a metre long.  In groups we had to build a pen that gave the puppy the largest area to run around in.  We used ice block sticks to help us - each stick = 1 metre.  Then we had to remember...

Hutt City Art Mural Competition

This is Me Art

Topic this term is All About Me, so we have completed an art piece that shows us doing something we love.  First we took a photo of ourselves doing a fun activity.  Then we printed them out in black and white and traced around the details.  We then used dye to highlight ourselves and other details and then used felt pens to colour in using doodles.  It was great fun!  ...

The senior school was so lucky to have the author Stacy Gregg come to talk to us about being a writer.  It was very interesting hearing about how she creates her ideas - from her own experiences, just like we do!  After listening to Stacy tell us about her writing process, we realised that as writers we also plan out our stories, think about our characters, setting and the plot.  ...

Room 5 Gardening

The seniors enjoyed the beautiful weather this week and we took advantage of it and got out into the garden.  We had to put newspaper around the fejioa trees and then cover the paper with chip bark to stop those pesky weeds.  And, we had to lug topsoil over to the planting beds using buckets.  It was hot and tiring work but also lots of fun.  Our garden is slowly coming...
